The Ferry Point Trail will allow access to the cape bordered to the north by the Chester River and to the east by the Kent Narrows. The trail will offer opportunities for interpretation of the working waterfront within the Kent Narrows area and the importance of preservation of natural habitat within the region. Oysters on the Half Shell - Will be the key exhibition and the interpretive centerpiece in the historic McNasby Oyster Company building currently under renovation. The last oyster-packing plant in the City of Annapolis and one of the last in the Chesapeake region is a most appropriate setting for this exhibition that will highlight both the natural history of the oyster and the cultural history of the people who made their living in the oyster industry. This grant will provide funding for construction drawings, fabrication and installation of a major portion of the exhibition. The Annapolis Maritime Museum will install interpretive panels along the waters edge to highlight changes in the landscape and overall scene during the last hundred years. The cultural history panels will be divided into five centuries1600, 1700, 1800, 1900, 2000based upon historical images and information. Maps appropriate for each time period will be incorporated to demonstrate the regions topographical changes and settlement patterns over the past four hundred years. Captain John Smiths Explorers Camp - Mason Neck State Park, a Chesapeake Bay Gateway site along the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail, will improve interpretation and education of this historic site while promoting and fostering long-term citizen stewardship. This project will provide 10 sessions of the Explorers Camp, a one week, half-day summer day camp experience free of charge for at risk youth. Mason Neck State Park is located in an area explored by Captain John Smith on his first voyage of discovery in the New World. The camp will introduce and develop an understanding and appreciation for the rich cultural, historic and natural resources which make this site so unique and important. Through this project 150 at risk youth will have an opportunity to explore the gateway park, engage their imagination and provide them with a layered education that will supplement the Virginia Standards of Learning for History and Science while building a lifelong ethic of stewardship for the Chesapeake Bay and its many wonders
